Who Is Antichrist?

12 October 2011

There are few subjects that Christians have been more deceived about than the subject of antichrist. People are always talking about him: when he is coming, where he will sit, what nations he will empower, and who he will be? The sad reality about this is that antichrist is already in their back yard and they do not even know it! Satan is a deceiver, and I am sure he is sitting back, laughing at people who are watching and waiting for a straw man to make his advent into the world, that does not now, nor will ever exist. While they are watching, "antichrist" is working, alive and well… in their own back yard.

Who Is Antichrist?

There are only four places in the Bible that the subject of antichrist is taught. Therefore, the primary doctrine of antichrist will be found in these four verses. Though it may surprise you, none of these verses are in the book of Revelation; none of them refer to antichrist as a single person; none of them say antichrist is going to sit on a throne; none of them say antichrist will rule a nation; none of them say the world will end when antichrist arrives.

All four references to antichrist were made by John, the apostle of love. This is what the Bible says about antichrist. Christians need to wake up and look in their back yard:

Little children, it is the last time: and as ye have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. - 1 John 2:18

It is obvious that antichrist is not one single person. John plainly declares that there are "many antichrists". So Christians need to stop saying that it is a president, or the ruler of some nation. They need to quit thinking that the antichrist is going to emerge somewhere and sit on a throne in some foreign nation. Most of these ideas come from speculative theories derived from the book of Revelation which never mentions antichrist.

John also makes it plain that antichrist is not coming in the future for: "even now are there many antichrists." There were many antichrists at work when John penned those words. That was about A.D. 90.

John also wrote: "it is the last time". That is a present tense statement. While some are looking for the "last time" to suddenly appear on the horizon, the last time actually began in John's day.

Dispensationalists have a problem with this but it is true. According to John, the fact that antichrist was already in the world proved that it was the last time.

Just stop for a moment and think about that. "Anti" means against or oppose. Antichrist is against Christ. Christ must be in the world for something to oppose Him. Therefore, the last time actually began when Jesus Christ made His advent into the world. The coming of Christ marked the beginning of the "last time."

Christ's birth marked the beginning of the gospel dispensation. This is the last dispensation. When Jesus came into the world a Holy War broke out in the natural world, and the cosmic universe. There is a Holy battle going on now. The enemy is at the door. It will be the gospel dispensation when Jesus returns for there will be a witness for Christ until He comes again. Therefore, antichrist is not coming at the end of time as we know it. Antichrist began to emerge at the dawn of Christianity. It is the last time!

In his second statement about antichrist, John tells us who and what antichrist really is:

"Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son." - 1 John 2:22

According to God, whoever says that Jesus was not God incarnate is a "liar". If you have been told that Jesus was not God, you have been lied to. But antichrist is much broader than a person. It is anyone or anything that denies that Jesus is the Christ. These include people, devils, doctrines, organizations, religions, even so called churches. Simply put, antichrist is anything that denies that Jesus was God incarnate.

There were many antichrists in that day. The first to oppose Christ was His own people for He revealed Himself to them first: "He came unto his own, and his own received him not." (John 1:11). Though the Roman court consented to His death, it was the voice of His own people that condemned Him to the ignominy of the cross. Why did they hate Him so? Because He told them the truth. He claimed to be God, manifested in the flesh: "Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God." (John 5:18). They tried to silence His truthful testimony. These were anti, against, Christ.

The devils knew it as well. God had come down to a depraved, sin cursed earth to deliver the captives from the fall, remove Satan‘s curse, and chain Satan and his fallen angels until the last day. They hated Jesus and everything He stood for. Satan thought Jesus' life would end on the cross. But it was there He attained our victory. The deceiver was deceived in his own malice. His head has been bruised and his empire will one day collapse. Until then, Satan and his host will do their best to oppose Christ on every hand, ruin His reputation, slander His doctrine, and confuse His people…antichrist!

That is why John also refers to these as liars. They lie about the deity of Jesus, about His doctrines, about the Bible, creation, marriage, godliness, and everything else that is Holy.

But John does not limit antichrist to the denial of Jesus alone. Antichrist is much broader than that. He also says that those that deny "the Father" are antichrist. This would be anyone or anything that denies the existence of God.

The reason is because it was God the Father that plainly declared that Jesus was His divine Son. At Jesus' baptism the Father spoke: "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." Mat. 3:17) Those that oppose Christ, also deny the true witness of the Father.

In his third statement of antichrist, John tells us that antichrist is also a spirit:

"And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world." - 1 John 4:3

From this we learn that antichrist is empowered by a spirit. This is a fallen, depraved spirit, void of the regenerating grace of the Holy Spirit. This spirit will not confess that the anointed Messiah has come in the flesh. It is a satanic spirit that denies the deity of Jesus Christ.

This is the spirit that empowers those who run organizations, so called churches, nations, religions, and whatever opposes Christ. This spirit moves people to write doctrines and establish cults that oppose our precious Lord Jesus.

As noted, this spirit was already in the world in John's day and we can be sure it is in the world today. Not only that, it has grown right alongside Christianity. Paul refers to it as principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places. (Ephesians 6:12). Principalities are nations, and world orders.
There are "many" of these and they go both named, and unnamed. I will give you some of them at the conclusion of this article.

In his fourth, and final verse John refers to antichrist as those that deceive people:

"For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist." - 2 John 1:7

If you have bought in to the doctrine that Jesus was not God, you have been deceived my friend. You have been seduced by antichrist. This deception has been going on for almost two-thousand years. Though thousands of Jews did confess Christ, it actually began with the Jewish nation. This spirit continued its malice. Today, it is propagated by Islam (the Muslim faith), who claim that Jesus was a prophet equal to their own…but not God. They are growing by leaps and bounds in a once Christian nation that has fallen asleep.

Other cults, and religions are antichrist and deny the deity of Christ. I do not have the space to give a detailed explanation of their doctrines. These include Jehovah Witnesses and the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the Mormons); Christian Science; Scientology; Eastern Religions; Buddhism; Baha'i faith; Seventh Day Adventists, Christian Science; and all New Age cults. These are just a few.

Organizations, like the A.C.L.U. are also working for the spirit of antichrist. That is why Paul referred to principalities, and powers. A principality is a magistrate, ruler, or government power. The war in the middle east is propagated by this spirit. They hate Christ and Christians. In their eyes, Christians are infidels. In the Christian's eyes, they are lost and need salvation in Christ. The spirit of antichrist is based upon hate while Christianity is base upon God's love.

One final note as a warning for those who might fall into this snare. There are three distinguishing marks of a cult. You may be courting one, or actually in one of them and think it is a church of Jesus Christ: 1) They deny the deity of Jesus Christ (the most obvious); 2) They deny the authority of God's Holy Bible and have writings of their own that they place above the Holy Scriptures; 3) There is one person that is their leader or prophet. Some of them claim angelic authority receiving visions from an angel of light for their prophecy (2 Corinthians 11:14). Yet we know it was the fallen angel that they heard from, the one that is the head of the antichrist movement.

Antichrist is not a single person, it is anything that opposes Jesus Christ.

The whole world needs to be viewed through the lens of a our crucified Savior, Jesus Christ, King of kings, and Lord of lords. One day He will show who is the only Potentate. Until then, look in your own back yard through the lens of Christ and I think you will see that antichrist is already there. A battle I raging. Arm yourself with the whole armor of God!
